Airborne Assault
Airborne Assault is a new and unique attraction, bringing to life the history from 1940 and the modern reality of Airborne Forces: from Africa, Sicily, Normandy and Arnhem in the Second World War through to the Falklands, Kosovo, the Gulf, Afghanistan and into the future.
We record British and joint Allied operations up to the present day, commemorating these events in film and memorabilia. Multi-media and interactive displays bring alive a proud history, which has been conducted entirely in the modern era, with much historic material available on film.
Additional plans are now underway to create a final phase - a new stand-alone Airborne Warfare Centre incorporating an exciting Activity Zone. A fundraising appeal will soon be launched for this second phase.
Easily accessible, just south of Cambridge at Jct 10 of the M11, IWM Duxford currently attracts over 450,000 visitors a year and is Europe's premier aviation museum, displaying some 200 aircraft. Its growing Land Warfare Centre has a fine collection of tanks, military vehicles and artillery.
Airborne Assault completes the Duxford picture by telling the story of men who go to war from the air.
"This is much more than a museum. Airborne Forces were to the fore at Normandy, Arnhem, the Falklands, Kosovo and Iraq, and now in Afghanistan. Airborne Assault celebrates the past, records history as it happens through modern media technology, and will point to the future. Our vision is that the spirit of Airborne Forces - leadership, courage, discpline, fitness and teamwork - will be brought alive at this world-class venue."
General Sir Mike Jackson, President of the Airborne Assault Appeal
